Football Field Dip Recipe
Introduction
Football Field Dip is a fun and festive party appetizer that transforms classic layered dip into a playful football-themed snack. With vibrant layers of beans, sour cream, guacamole, and more, it’s sure to be a crowd-pleaser at any game day gathering.

Ingredients
- 2 small flour or corn tortillas
- Canola oil, for brushing
- 1/2 tsp. kosher salt, plus more
- 2 (16-oz.) cans store-bought or homemade refried beans
- 1/2 tsp. store-bought or homemade adobo seasoning
- 2 1/4 cups sour cream, divided
- Freshly ground black pepper
- 1 3/4 cups store-bought or homemade pico de gallo
- 1 3/4 cups store-bought or homemade queso
- 4 scallions, thinly sliced (about 1/2 cup)
- 1 1/2 cups store-bought or homemade guacamole
- 1/2 lime
- 7 pitted black olives
- 7 pitted green olives
- 14 baby carrots
- Tortilla chips, veggies, or pita chips, for serving
Instructions
- Step 1: Preheat the oven to 400°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Brush each tortilla lightly with canola oil and sprinkle with salt. Using a sharp knife, carefully cut a 2-dimensional field goal shape into each tortilla and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
- Step 2: Bake tortillas for 6 to 7 minutes until they are golden brown and crisp. Transfer them to paper towels to cool.
- Step 3: In a medium bowl, combine the refried beans and adobo seasoning thoroughly. Spread the bean mixture evenly in the bottom of a 13″-by-9″ baking dish. In the same bowl, mix 2 cups of sour cream with 1/2 teaspoon salt and a pinch of black pepper. Spread this sour cream mixture over the beans in an even layer.
- Step 4: Strain any excess liquid from the pico de gallo using a fine-mesh strainer. Starting at the shorter left edge of the baking dish, layer the pico de gallo over the sour cream, leaving a 2-inch strip of sour cream exposed on the right edge.
- Step 5: From the shorter right edge, spread the queso over the exposed sour cream and part of the pico de gallo, leaving a 2-inch area of pico de gallo visible on the left edge. This will form one end zone. Sprinkle scallions over the queso layer, leaving a 2-inch section of queso exposed to create the second end zone. Spread guacamole evenly over the scallions to create the “field.” Squeeze lime juice over the guacamole.
- Step 6: Place the remaining 1/4 cup sour cream into a piping bag fitted with a small tip. Pipe a single line across the center of the guacamole parallel to the short edges of the dish. Pipe two evenly spaced lines on each side of this center line to create five goal lines total. At the base of the center line, pipe the number “5” to the left and “0” to the right. Repeat on the other side. Place a tortilla field goal at each end of the dip to complete the football field look.
- Step 7: Attach one olive to the end of each baby carrot to resemble a football helmet. Insert these “helmets” into the dip with the olive end facing up. Serve with tortilla chips, veggies, or pita chips alongside.
Tips & Variations
- Use homemade versions of beans, pico de gallo, queso, and guacamole for fresher flavor and better texture.
- For a spicier kick, add a dash of hot sauce to the refried beans or guacamole.
- Swap baby carrots with celery sticks or cucumber spears for a different crunch and look.
- Make the dip ahead of time and store it without piping the sour cream lines; add those just before serving to keep them crisp.
Storage
Store any leftover dip covered tightly in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Keep the tortilla field goals and carrot helmets separate to prevent sogginess. Reheat the dip layers (except toppings) gently in the microwave or oven before assembling and serving. Freshen guacamole and sour cream layers as needed.
How to Serve

Serve this delicious recipe with your favorite sides.
FAQs
Can I make the Football Field Dip ahead of time?
Yes, you can prepare most layers up to a day in advance. Keep the garnishes, like the piped sour cream lines, tortilla goals, and carrot helmets, separate and add them just before serving for the best presentation.
What can I use if I don’t have adobo seasoning?
If you don’t have adobo seasoning, a mix of smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, ground oregano, salt, and pepper makes a great substitute.

Decorations and Serving

Instructions
- Prepare Tortilla Goalposts: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Brush each tortilla lightly with canola oil and sprinkle with salt. Using a sharp knife, carefully cut a simple 2D field goal shape into each tortilla. Place the shaped tortillas on the prepared baking sheet.
- Bake Tortilla Goalposts: Bake the tortillas for 6 to 7 minutes until golden brown and crisp. Once baked, transfer them to paper towels to cool and set aside for use as goalposts on the dip.
- Prepare Bean Layer: In a medium bowl, mix the refried beans thoroughly with the adobo seasoning. Spread this bean mixture evenly at the bottom of a 13-inch by 9-inch baking dish to form the first base layer of the dip.
- Prepare Sour Cream Layer: Using the same medium bowl, combine 2 cups of sour cream with 1/2 teaspoon salt and a pinch of freshly ground black pepper. Stir well. Then spread this sour cream mixture evenly over the refried bean layer in the baking dish.
- Layer Pico de Gallo: Strain any excess liquid from the pico de gallo using a fine-mesh strainer. Starting at the shorter left side edge of the dish, layer the pico de gallo over the sour cream, leaving a 2-inch space of sour cream visible on the right edge of the dish.
- Layer Queso and Scallions: Starting from the shorter right edge, spread queso over the visible sour cream and pico de gallo, leaving 2 inches of pico de gallo exposed on the left. Sprinkle the thinly sliced scallions over the queso, leaving 2 inches of queso visible to create the second end zone area.
- Spread Guacamole Field: Spread the guacamole evenly over the scallions, shaping it to represent the football field. Squeeze fresh lime juice over the guacamole for brightness and flavor.
- Pipe Yard Lines and Scores: Place the remaining 1/4 cup sour cream into a piping bag fitted with a small tip. Pipe a single horizontal line across the center of the guacamole, parallel to the short edges of the dish. Then pipe two evenly spaced lines on each side of this center line to create five goal lines total. At the base of the center line, pipe a number “5” to the left side and a “0” to the right side, and repeat on the opposite end to mimic scoreboard numbers.
- Assemble Goalposts: Position the baked tortilla field goals standing upright at each end of the dip, representing the goalposts on the football field.
- Create Helmeted Carrots: Place one olive on top of each baby carrot to mimic football helmets. Arrange the decorated carrots into the dip with the olive ends sticking up, resembling players on the field.
- Serve: Serve the completed football field dip with tortilla chips, vegetable sticks, or pita chips on the side for dipping.
