Ingredients
Scale
Dough
- All-purpose flour, for dusting
- 8 oz. tube crescent roll dough
Filling
- 8 all-beef frankfurter hot dogs
Finishing
- 1 large egg, beaten to blend (egg wash)
- Flaky sea salt, for sprinkling
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare Dough: Arrange a rack in the center of the oven and preheat to 375°F (190°C). On a lightly floured surface, gently spread the crescent roll dough into a rectangle using clean fingers and pinch the seams together. Then, use a rolling pin to roll the dough out evenly to a 10″ x 8″ rectangle. Slice the dough lengthwise into 8 strips, each about 1 inch wide.
- Weave the Dough and Hot Dogs: Transfer 7 strips onto a parchment-lined baking sheet. Fold back every other strip to expose parchment. Starting from the left side, place one hot dog across the strips. Bring the folded strips back over the hot dog to secure it. Fold back the alternate strips to expose parchment again, place the second hot dog next to the first, then fold strips back over it. Repeat this weaving process until all 8 hot dogs are interwoven in the lattice.
- Seal the Edges: Take the remaining dough strip and cut it in half crosswise. Wrap each half strip around the left and right edges of the woven hot dogs, pinching the dough together to seal. Trim any uneven edges to form a neat rectangle.
- Apply Egg Wash and Season: Brush the entire dough surface evenly with beaten egg wash. Sprinkle flaky sea salt over the dough for extra flavor and a crunchy texture after baking.
- Bake: Bake the pigs in a quilt in the preheated oven for 18 to 20 minutes, or until the dough is golden brown and cooked through. Remove from oven and let cool slightly.
- Serve: Cut the baked pigs in a quilt into bite-size pieces and transfer them to a serving platter. Serve warm as a delightful appetizer or snack.
Notes
- Be careful not to stretch the dough too thin when rolling to prevent tearing during weaving.
- Flaky sea salt adds a nice finishing crunch and flavor but can be omitted or substituted if preferred.
- For a spicier twist, consider adding a thin layer of mustard or cheese on the dough strips before weaving.
- Ensure the egg wash is applied evenly for the best golden color and shine.
- These can be prepared ahead of time and baked fresh before serving.
