Description

This easy and quick Mashed Sweet Potatoes recipe is perfect for a creamy and flavorful side dish ready in under 30 minutes. Using simple ingredients like sweet potatoes, butter, garlic, and milk, this dish offers a comforting mash with a hint of garlic and a smooth texture, ideal for any meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Sweet Potatoes

  • 2 1/2 lb Sweet potatoes (cut into small cubes; can be peeled or unpeeled)

Seasonings and Dairy

  • 1/4 cup Unsalted butter (plus more for garnish, if desired)
  • 2 cloves Garlic (minced)
  • 1/2 cup Milk (warm or room temperature; for firmer mash, use less or omit)
  • 1/2 tsp Sea salt (to taste)
  • 1/4 tsp Black pepper (to taste)

Instructions

  1. Boil the Sweet Potatoes: Bring a large dutch oven or pot of salted water to a boil. Add the sweet potatoes and boil for about 15 minutes, or until they are very soft when pierced with a fork. Drain and pat dry.
  2. Sauté the Garlic: In the same dutch oven, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté until fragrant, about 1-2 minutes. Remove from heat to prevent burning.
  3. Mash the Potatoes: Return the drained sweet potatoes to the dutch oven with the melted butter and garlic. Add the warm or room temperature milk, then mash using a potato masher until smooth and creamy. For a silky texture, you can alternatively use a hand mixer or immersion blender.
  4. Season and Serve: Season the mashed sweet potatoes with sea salt and black pepper to taste. Serve hot, optionally garnished with additional butter or a sprinkle of fresh parsley or chives.

Notes

  • For a firmer mash, use less milk or omit milk entirely.
  • You can peel the sweet potatoes if preferred, but leaving the skin on adds texture and nutrients.
  • For an even smoother texture, consider using a hand mixer or immersion blender.
  • Additional garnishes like fresh herbs, cinnamon, or a drizzle of maple syrup complement the sweet potatoes wonderfully.
  • Ensure garlic does not brown or burn when sautéing, as it can turn bitter.
