Grilled Chicken and Vegetables Skewers with Hoisin Sauce Recipe

  • Author: lilan
  • Total Time: 27 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Description

These flavorful grilled chicken kebabs are marinated in a savory hoisin and soy sauce blend, then grilled alongside fresh baby bok choy and scallions for a deliciously charred and aromatic dish perfect for a summer BBQ or quick weeknight dinner.

Ingredients

Scale

Marinade

  • 1/4 cup hoisin sauce
  • 3 tbsp reduced-sodium soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp plus 2 tsp sesame oil
  • 1” piece ginger, grated or minced
  • 2 cloves garlic, grated or minced

Main Ingredients

  • 1 lb chicken thighs, cut into 1” pieces
  • 1 lb baby bok choy, rinsed and cut in half lengthwise
  • 1 bunch scallions, cut into 2” pieces
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • Kosher salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • Toasted sesame seeds (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Marinade: In a medium bowl, whisk together hoisin sauce, soy sauce, sesame oil, grated ginger, and grated garlic until fully combined. Set this flavorful mixture aside for later use.
  2. Season the Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the chicken pieces, halved baby bok choy, and scallions. Drizzle with vegetable oil, then season generously with kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper. Toss everything together to ensure an even coating on all ingredients.
  3. Preheat the Grill and Soak Skewers: Preheat your grill to medium-high heat for about 3 minutes. Meanwhile, soak wooden skewers in a shallow pan filled with water for 10 minutes to prevent them from burning on the grill.
  4. Assemble the Skewers: Once soaked, thread the chicken pieces, baby bok choy halves, and groups of three scallions onto each skewer, alternating ingredients for a balanced flavor and presentation.
  5. Grill the Kebabs: Place the skewers on the preheated grill and cook for approximately 4 minutes, turning occasionally. After the first 4 minutes, begin brushing the skewers with the prepared hoisin marinade after each flip to build up layers of flavor and a nice glaze.
  6. Check for Doneness: Continue grilling for another 4 to 5 minutes or until the thickest piece of chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165ºF (74ºC) using an instant-read thermometer, ensuring the chicken is safely cooked through.
  7. Serve: Transfer the cooked skewers to a serving platter, sprinkle liberally with toasted sesame seeds for an extra crunch and nutty flavor, and serve immediately while hot and juicy.

Notes

  • Soaking wooden skewers prevents them from burning and helps maintain structural integrity while grilling.
  • Ensure the internal temperature of chicken reaches 165°F to avoid any food safety issues.
  • You can substitute chicken thighs with chicken breasts if preferred, though thighs remain juicier when grilled.
  • For additional flavor, allow the chicken to marinate in the hoisin mixture for 30 minutes to an hour before assembling skewers.
  • Serve these kebabs with steamed rice or a fresh green salad for a complete meal.
