Ingredients
Scale
Blueberry Jam
- 3/4 cup fresh blueberries
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tsp lemon juice
Danish Filling and Assembly
- 1 sheet frozen puff pastry dough, thawed
- 4 oz cream cheese, softened
- 1 & 1/2 tbsp granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup fresh blueberries
- 1/3 cup blueberry jam (prepared)
- 1 egg
- 1 tbsp water
Instructions
- Make the Blueberry Jam: Place the blueberries, granulated sugar, and lemon juice in a medium saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, for about 15 minutes or until the mixture thickens into a jam consistency. Once done, set aside to cool.
- Prepare the Puff Pastry: While the jam is cooking, thaw the puff pastry according to package instructions. Preheat the oven to 400°F (204°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Shape the Puff Pastry: On a floured surface, roll the chilled puff pastry into a 9 by 9-inch square. Cut the dough into 9 equal 3 by 3-inch squares. Using a sharp knife, score a smaller square inside each piece about 1/4-inch from the edges without cutting all the way through. Poke the center of each square with a fork to prevent it from puffing up excessively.
- Prepare the Cream Cheese Filling: In a small bowl, mix the softened cream cheese with 1 1/2 tablespoons granulated sugar until smooth and well combined.
- Fill the Danishes: Scoop a heaping tablespoon of the cream cheese mixture into the center of each puff pastry square, spreading gently while avoiding the edges. In another small bowl, combine the freshly made blueberry jam with the fresh blueberries, then spoon a heaping tablespoon of this mixture on top of the cream cheese layer, spreading gently.
- Apply Egg Wash & Bake: Beat the egg with water to create an egg wash. Brush the edges of each pastry square with the egg wash to give them a golden-brown finish. Bake the danishes on the prepared baking sheet for 16 minutes or until the pastry is puffed and golden.
- Serve: Once baked, let them cool slightly. Optionally, dust with powdered sugar before serving. Enjoy your fresh blueberry cheese danishes warm or at room temperature.
Notes
- Make sure the puff pastry is thawed but still cold for easier rolling and better puff.
- Be careful when scoring the square: do not cut all the way through so the edges can puff while the center stays flat.
- You can substitute blueberry jam with other fruit jams if preferred.
- Store leftover danishes in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in a warm oven before serving.
