Air Fryer Falafel Recipe

Introduction

Air fryer falafel offers a deliciously crispy and healthier twist on this classic Middle Eastern favorite. Made with fresh herbs and toasted spices, these falafel patties are quick to prepare and perfect for a satisfying snack or meal.

Two falafel wraps are shown on a white marbled surface. Each wrap has a flat pita bread base, slightly toasted with a few darker spots. On top of the pita, there is a layer of fresh green lettuce covering most of the surface, followed by several round, thin cucumber slices placed neatly. Three golden-brown falafel patties with a slightly rough texture sit on the cucumbers. White sauce is drizzled over the falafel in irregular lines. On the side, there are lemon wedges and a small white bowl filled with extra white sauce. Photo taken with an iphone --ar 4:5 --v 7

Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • 1 can chickpeas (14 oz)
  • 1/2 cup onion (roughly chopped)
  • 1/2 cup fresh parsley (lightly packed)
  • 1/2 cup fresh cilantro (lightly packed)
  • 2 teaspoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1/2 tablespoon garlic (minced)
  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 cup chickpea flour
  • 1/2 tablespoon baking powder

Instructions

  1. Step 1: Toast the cumin, coriander, and cardamom in a dry skillet over medium heat, stirring constantly until fragrant, about 1 minute. Transfer the toasted spices to a large food processor.
  2. Step 2: Drain and rinse the chickpeas well. Pat them dry between two layers of paper towels and remove any loose skins. Add the chickpeas to the food processor.
  3. Step 3: Add the onion, parsley, cilantro, lemon juice, garlic, sea salt, and cayenne pepper to the food processor. Pulse until the mixture is paste-like but still has a few small lumps, scraping down the sides as needed.
  4. Step 4: Transfer the mixture to a bowl and stir in the chickpea flour and baking powder. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour to let the flavors meld.
  5. Step 5: Preheat the air fryer to 350°F. Shape the mixture into 10 balls, about 2 tablespoons each, then press them slightly to just under 1/2-inch thick patties.
  6. Step 6: Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray and arrange the falafel patties inside, leaving space between each. You may need to cook in batches depending on your air fryer size.
  7. Step 7: Spray the tops of the falafel with oil spray. Air fry for 9 to 10 minutes until the bottoms are lightly browned, carefully flip, and cook another 9 to 10 minutes until golden brown and crisp.
  8. Step 8: Remove the falafel from the air fryer and serve immediately with your favorite dip or salad.

Tips & Variations

  • Use fresh herbs like dill or mint for a different flavor profile.
  • If the mixture feels too loose, add a little more chickpea flour to help it hold shape.
  • Serve falafel in pita bread with tahini sauce and fresh veggies for a classic sandwich.
  • For an extra crispy finish, spray falafel with a little oil before air frying.

Storage

Store leftover falafel in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the air fryer at 350°F for 3 to 5 minutes to restore crispiness. You can also freeze uncooked falafel patties on a baking sheet, then transfer to a freezer bag; cook from frozen, adding a few extra minutes to the air frying time.

How to Serve

The image shows a close-up of three falafel patties, each topped with a drizzle of white sauce, placed on a layer of fresh green lettuce and thin cucumber slices. These layers sit on a soft, folded flatbread, with part of the flatbread wrapped around the falafel, lettuce, and cucumber. To the side, there is a small white bowl filled with a creamy white sauce. The scene is set on a white marbled texture surface with a cut lemon visible in the corner. photo taken with an iphone --ar 4:5 --v 7

FAQs

Can I use dried chickpeas instead of canned?

Yes, but you’ll need to soak and cook the dried chickpeas until tender before using. This will give a better texture and flavor but requires more preparation time.

Is it necessary to chill the falafel mixture?

Chilling helps the mixture firm up and develop flavors, making it easier to shape patties and improving the final texture. It’s recommended but if you’re short on time, you can shape and cook immediately with slightly less sturdy results.

Perfect as a snack, appetizer, or in sandwiches, these falafels are easy to make and full of vibrant flavor.

Ingredients

Scale

Spices

  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom

Main Ingredients

  • 1 can chickpeas (14 oz)
  • 1/2 cup onion, roughly chopped
  • 1/2 cup fresh parsley, lightly packed
  • 1/2 cup fresh cilantro, lightly packed
  • 2 teaspoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1/2 tablespoon garlic, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cayenne pepper

Binding Agents

  • 1/2 cup chickpea flour
  • 1/2 tablespoon baking powder

Instructions

  1. Toast spices: Place the cumin, coriander, and cardamom in a dry skillet over medium heat. Stir constantly and toast the spices until fragrant, about 1 minute then transfer them to a large food processor.
  2. Dry chickpeas: Drain and rinse the canned chickpeas well. Place them between two layers of paper towel and dry thoroughly. Remove any loose skins as much as possible to improve texture, then add the chickpeas to the food processor.
  3. Process ingredients: Add the chopped onion, parsley, cilantro, lemon juice, minced garlic, sea salt, and cayenne pepper to the food processor with the toasted spices and chickpeas. Pulse until the mixture breaks down into a coarse paste with a few small lumps remaining. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed.
  4. Chill mixture: Transfer the falafel mixture to a bowl and stir in chickpea flour and baking powder until fully combined. Cover the bowl and refrigerate for at least 1 hour to allow flavors to meld and the mixture to firm up.
  5. Shape falafel: Preheat your air fryer to 350°F (175°C). Using about 2 tablespoons of mixture per falafel, form 10 balls and then gently press each ball into a patty just under 1/2-inch thick.
  6. Air fry falafel: Lightly spray the basket of your air fryer with cooking spray. Arrange the falafel patties in a single layer, leaving space between each. You may need to cook in two batches. Spray the tops of the falafel lightly with oil spray. Air fry for 9 to 10 minutes until the bottom is lightly browned. Flip them carefully with a spatula and cook for another 9 to 10 minutes, or until golden and crispy on both sides.
  7. Serve and enjoy: Remove the falafel from the air fryer and serve hot. They pair beautifully with tahini sauce, hummus, or tucked inside pita bread with fresh veggies.

Notes

  • Removing loose chickpea skins is optional but helps achieve a smoother texture.
  • Chilling the mixture is important for shaping and flavor development.
  • Use an oil spray for lighter cooking and crispier results without excess oil.
  • If your air fryer basket is small, cook falafel in batches to avoid overcrowding.
  • Feel free to adjust spices to your taste, adding more cayenne for extra heat if desired.
