Description
Oreo Balls are a delicious and easy no-bake treat made from crushed Oreo cookies and cream cheese, coated with melted semi-sweet chocolate. These bite-sized desserts are perfect for parties, holidays, or any time you crave a sweet and creamy snack with minimal effort.
Ingredients
Scale
Base
- 1 package (14.3 ounces) Oreo cookies, finely crushed
- 1 package (8 ounces) cream cheese, softened
Coating
- 1 package (12 ounces) semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1 tablespoon vegetable shortening (optional, for smoother chocolate)
Optional Decoration
- Sprinkles or other decorations
Instructions
- Prepare Oreo Crumbs: Crush the Oreo cookies into fine crumbs using a food processor or place them in a sealed bag and crush with a rolling pin. Transfer the crumbs into a large mixing bowl.
- Mix Oreo and Cream Cheese: Add the softened cream cheese to the Oreo crumbs. Mix thoroughly with your hands or a spatula until the mixture is smooth and even. If the mixture feels too dry, add a bit more cream cheese; if too wet, add more Oreo crumbs.
- Form Oreo Balls: Roll the mixture into approximately 1-inch diameter balls. Arrange them on a baking sheet lined with parchment or wax paper.
- Freeze the Oreo Balls: Place the baking sheet with the Oreo balls into the freezer for at least 30 minutes to firm up the mixture before coating.
- Melt Chocolate: Melt the semi-sweet chocolate chips in the microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring between each until smooth. Optionally, stir in 1 tablespoon of vegetable shortening for a smoother, shinier chocolate coating.
- Dip Oreo Balls: Remove the Oreo balls from the freezer, then dip each one completely into the melted chocolate using a fork to lift them out and tap off excess chocolate.
- Decorate: Place the chocolate-coated Oreo balls back onto the lined baking sheet and immediately add sprinkles or other decorations if desired.
- Set and Store: Refrigerate the dipped Oreo balls for at least 30 minutes to allow the chocolate to fully set. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week or freeze for up to one month.
Notes
- Ensure the cream cheese is softened for easier mixing with the Oreo crumbs.
- If you don’t have vegetable shortening, you can skip it, but it helps create a smoother chocolate coating.
- Use parchment or wax paper to prevent the balls from sticking to the baking sheet.
- For a firmer texture before dipping, freeze the Oreo balls longer than 30 minutes if needed.
- These treats are best served chilled straight from the refrigerator.
- Variations include using white chocolate or milk chocolate chips for coating instead of semi-sweet.
