Description

Classic Monte Cristo Sandwich made with layers of ham, turkey, and Swiss cheese between white bread, dipped in an egg batter, pan-fried to golden perfection, lightly dusted with powdered sugar, and served with raspberry jam for a delicious sweet and savory experience.

Ingredients

Scale

Bread and Meat

  • 4 slices of white bread
  • 4 slices of ham
  • 4 slices of turkey

Cheese

  • 4 slices of Swiss cheese

Egg Mixture

  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup of milk
  • A pinch of salt and pepper

Cooking

  • 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter

Garnish and Serving

  • Powdered sugar (for dusting)
  • Raspberry jam (for serving)

Instructions

  1. Assemble the sandwiches: Place 2 slices of ham, 2 slices of turkey, and 2 slices of Swiss cheese between two slices of white bread. Press the sandwiches gently to compact and optionally trim the crusts.
  2. Prepare the egg mixture: In a shallow dish, whisk together the eggs, milk, salt, and pepper until well combined.
  3. Melt the butter: Heat 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter in a large skillet over medium heat until melted and hot.
  4. Coat the sandwiches: Dip each assembled sandwich into the egg mixture, making sure to coat both sides thoroughly.
  5. Cook the sandwiches: Place the soaked sandwiches in the skillet and cook each side for 3-4 minutes or until golden brown and cooked through.
  6. Drain excess butter: Transfer the cooked sandwiches to a paper towel-lined plate to remove excess butter.
  7. Garnish and slice: Lightly dust the sandwiches with powdered sugar and slice them diagonally for serving.
  8. Serve with jam: Serve the Monte Cristo sandwiches hot with raspberry jam on the side for dipping.

Notes

  • For a crispier sandwich, cook over medium-low heat to ensure the cheese melts without burning the bread.
  • You can substitute white bread with brioche or challah for a richer flavor.
  • Raspberry jam can be swapped with strawberry or apricot preserves based on preference.
  • Trim crusts for a neater presentation but it’s optional.
  • Serve immediately for best texture and flavor as the sandwich may become soggy if left to sit.
