Dry Mix Ingredients
- 2 cups (397g) granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons vanilla powder or King Arthur Pure Vanilla Extract
- 2 1/2 cups (354g) semisweet chocolate
- 3/4 cup (113g) milk chocolate
- 1 cup (85g) Dutch-process cocoa
- Pinch of table salt (optional)
Instructions
- Combine Sugar and Vanilla: In the bowl of a food processor, combine the granulated sugar and vanilla powder or vanilla extract. Pulse for 5 to 6 seconds until the mixture is well combined and evenly mixed.
- Chop and Add Chocolates: Coarsely chop the semisweet and milk chocolates, then add them to the food processor bowl. Pulse in 10-second intervals, grinding the chocolates finely and mixing them thoroughly with the vanilla sugar.
- Add Cocoa and Salt: Add the Dutch-process cocoa powder and a pinch of salt (if using) to the bowl. Pulse again until all ingredients are well incorporated, resulting in a coarse mixture resembling brown sugar.
- Store the Mix: Transfer the hot chocolate mix to a large glass or plastic jar with an airtight lid for storage. The mix can be stored for 6 to 9 months.
- Prepare Hot Chocolate: To make a cup of hot chocolate, combine 1/4 cup of the mix with 8 ounces of hot milk. Stir thoroughly until all the chocolate is melted and the drink is smooth. Garnish with whipped cream, marshmallows, or your favorite toppings.
Notes
- The vanilla powder can be substituted with pure vanilla extract for a more pronounced flavor.
- Coarsely chopping the chocolates before processing helps the mixture blend evenly without turning into a paste.
- Store in an airtight container to maintain freshness and prevent moisture from affecting the mix.
- Perfect for holiday gifts—package in mason jars with ribbons and include preparation instructions on a card.
- Use whole milk for a creamier hot chocolate or substitute with plant-based milk for a dairy-free option.
