Description

These Frankenstein Rice Krispies Treats are a fun and spooky twist on the classic cereal snack. Perfect for Halloween or themed parties, they combine gooey marshmallow and crispy cereal with vibrant green coloring, chocolate-dipped tops, candy eyes, and tootsie roll bolts to create an edible Frankenstein monster.

Ingredients

Scale

Marshmallow Mixture

  • 10 ounces large marshmallows (or mini marshmallows)
  • 1/2 cup marshmallow fluff
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 58 drops green food coloring

Cereal

  • 8 cups Rice Krispies cereal

Chocolate Coating

  • 1 cup dark chocolate chips
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

Decorations

  • 18 large candy eyes
  • 9 small Tootsie Rolls
  • 1/2 cup black or brown icing

Instructions

  1. Melt marshmallows and butter: In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter. Once melted, add the marshmallows and marshmallow fluff. Stir constantly over medium-high heat until the mixture is completely melted and smooth.
  2. Add food coloring: Stir in 5-8 drops of green food coloring, adjusting the amount until you achieve your desired vibrant green color. Mix thoroughly.
  3. Combine with cereal: Quickly pour the melted marshmallow mixture into a large bowl with the Rice Krispies cereal. Stir until very well combined. Work quickly as the mixture will start to set as it cools.
  4. Press into dish: Evenly press the mixture into a greased 9×13-inch baking dish using a spatula or wax paper to flatten the surface.
  5. Chill and cut: Refrigerate for at least 15 minutes or until firm. Remove and cut into 3 x 4-inch squares to form Frankenstein heads.
  6. Melt chocolate: In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the dark chocolate chips and vegetable oil. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring between each, until chocolate is melted and smooth. Be careful not to overheat or add water to avoid seizing.
  7. Dip and set chocolate: Dip the top inch of each Rice Krispies square into the melted chocolate. Place on a greased cooling rack or non-stick surface to allow chocolate to firm. Refrigerate if you want to speed up setting.
  8. Attach eyes and mouth: Use black or brown icing to place small dots where you want the eyes on each treat. Stick the candy eyes onto the icing dots. Then use the same icing to pipe a mouth beneath the eyes.
  9. Add bolts: Cut Tootsie Rolls in half and attach them to the sides of the Frankenstein heads using the icing as glue to resemble bolts.
  10. Serve and enjoy: Let the icing set fully before serving. These spooky treats are perfect for Halloween celebrations or monster-themed parties!

Notes

  • Use mini marshmallows if large ones aren’t available; adjust melting time accordingly.
  • For a more vivid color, add a few extra drops of green food coloring, but avoid too much to prevent artificial taste.
  • Make sure to work quickly when mixing cereal with marshmallow as it hardens fast.
  • If chocolate thickens, microwave in short bursts with stirring to restore smoothness.
  • Customize with different candy eyes or mouth designs for extra fun.
  • Store leftover treats in an airtight container at room temperature to keep them fresh up to 3 days.
