Ingredients
Cake
- 2 Chocolate cakes (Round, 8x2 inches each)
Frosting and Decorations
- 5 cups Buttercream icing (colored blue)
- 1/2 cup Black icing (store-bought or homemade)
- 1/2 cup White fondant
- 2 black icing piped circles for eyes
- 1 Chocolate chip cookie (partially broken for decoration)
Instructions
- Bake Cakes: Bake two round chocolate cakes, each about 8 inches in diameter and 2 inches tall, and allow them to cool completely on a wire rack to ensure even frosting later.
- Prepare Frosting: While the cakes bake and cool, prepare blue buttercream icing either by coloring homemade buttercream or using pre-colored icing.
- Assemble Base Layers: Place one cake layer on your serving dish or cake board.
- First Frosting Layer: Spread a generous and even layer of blue buttercream on top of the first cake to help the layers stick together.
- Stack Second Layer: Carefully place the second cake layer on top of the frosted first layer and gently press down to secure the layers.
- Crumb Coat: Apply a thin, smooth crumb coat of blue icing all over the entire stacked cake to lock in crumbs and create a clean base.
- Mark Mouth Area: Use a toothpick to lightly outline where Cookie Monster’s mouth will be on the side of the cake.
- Remove Icing for Mouth: Use a spoon to scoop away some of the blue icing from the mouth area to prepare for the black icing application.
- Apply Mouth Icing: Spread black icing into the mouth area with a small spatula or knife. The edges don’t need to be perfect for a more natural look.
- Pipe Fur Texture: Fill a piping bag fitted with a grass tip (Wilton Tip #233) with blue buttercream. Pipe fur by starting from the outer edges of the cake and working inward, covering the entire top and sides except the mouth area.
- Create Eyes: Roll out white fondant and cut two circles using a cookie cutter. Pipe black icing dots on each circle to form pupils and stick them near the top of the cake to create Cookie Monster’s iconic eyes.
- Add Cookie Decoration: Place a partially broken chocolate chip cookie near the mouth area. Scatter some cookie crumbs around it to simulate Cookie Monster’s cookie-eating moment.
- Finishing Touches: Pipe a decorative border around the base of the cake with blue icing for a clean, polished look.
- Serve and Enjoy: Your Cookie Monster cake is ready to delight guests with its playful appearance and delicious chocolate flavor.
Notes
- Make sure cakes are completely cooled before frosting to avoid melting the buttercream.
- Use gel food coloring to get a vibrant blue without thinning the frosting.
- The grass piping tip creates the textured “fur” effect; practice piping on parchment paper if unfamiliar.
- The black icing for the mouth can be store-bought to save time.
- The cookie and crumbs add whimsical cookie-eating detail but can be omitted for allergy concerns.
