Ingredients
Scale
Chocolate Mixture
- 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 10 Tbsp butter
Egg Mixture
- 3 whole eggs
- 3 egg yolks
- 1½ cups powdered sugar
Other Ingredients
- ½ cup all-purpose flour
Instructions
- Prepare the Pan: Preheat your oven to 450ºF. Generously grease the Skull Cake Pan with shortening and cooking spray, ensuring all the intricate nooks and crannies are well coated to prevent sticking.
- Melt Chocolate and Butter: In a saucepan over low heat, melt the semi-sweet chocolate chips together with the butter. Stir frequently until smooth and fully combined. Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly to avoid cooking the eggs in the next step.
- Mix Eggs and Sugar: In a mixing bowl, whisk the 3 whole eggs and 3 egg yolks together until well combined. Beat in the powdered sugar until the mixture is smooth and slightly thickened.
- Combine Mixtures: Add the cooled chocolate and butter mixture to the egg and sugar mixture. Then sift in the all-purpose flour and mix gently but thoroughly until a smooth batter forms.
- Fill the Pan: Pour the batter evenly into the prepared skull cake pan, filling each cavity almost to the top for full lava effect.
- Bake: Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for 11 to 13 minutes. The edges should be set, but the centers remain soft and gooey to create the lava effect.
- Cool and Unmold: Remove the pan from the oven and let the cakes cool in the pan for 3 minutes to set slightly. Then carefully invert the pan onto a parchment-lined baking rack and gently lift it off to reveal the skull cakes.
- Serve: Serve the warm Chocolate Lava Skull Cakes immediately with whipped cream and/or vanilla ice cream for an extra indulgent experience.
Notes
- Ensure the pan is thoroughly greased to avoid sticking in detailed areas.
- Do not overbake; the center should remain molten for the lava effect.
- Use high-quality semi-sweet chocolate for the richest flavor.
- Let cakes cool slightly before unmolding to maintain shape integrity.
- Serve immediately after unmolding to enjoy the molten center at its best.
