Cheesy Gruyère Phyllo Bites with Honey, Chives, and Almonds Recipe

  • Author: lilan
  • Total Time: 35-40 minutes
  • Yield: 12 phyllo bites 1x

Description

Delicious and crispy Phyllo Bites filled with melted gruyere cheese, brushed with butter, baked to golden perfection, and finished with honey, chives, and toasted almonds for a perfect savory-sweet appetizer or snack.

Ingredients

Scale

Phyllo Dough

  • 8 oz phyllo dough (thawed, use half of one stack and save the other half for later use)

Butter

  • 10 tbsp unsalted butter (melted, divided)

Cheese

  • 8 oz gruyere (rind removed, freshly grated)

Toppings

  • 612 tbsp honey
  • 3 tbsp chives (chopped)
  • ¼ cup almonds (chopped, toasted)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (204°C) to ensure it is hot and ready for baking the phyllo bites.
  2. Prepare the Phyllo: Unroll the 8 oz package of phyllo dough. Carefully remove about 10 sheets for this recipe. Immediately wrap the remaining sheets tightly in plastic wrap to prevent them from drying out.
  3. Assemble the Rolls: Lay the phyllo sheets flat on a clean surface. Brush melted butter generously between every 2-3 layers, using about 3 tablespoons total. Evenly spread the freshly grated gruyere cheese on the top sheet. Then, roll the layered sheets tightly lengthwise into a long cylinder.
  4. Cut and Arrange: Brush each cup of a 12-cup muffin tin with melted butter to prevent sticking. Use a sharp knife to slice the rolled phyllo cylinder into 12 even rounds. Place each round into a buttered muffin tin cup.
  5. Bake the Bites: Brush the top of each phyllo bite with about ½ tablespoon of melted butter. Bake the bites in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until they are golden brown and crispy. Begin checking for doneness at the 15-minute mark to avoid burning.
  6. Finish and Serve: Remove the phyllo bites from the oven and allow them to cool slightly. While still warm, drizzle each bite with ½ to 1 tablespoon of honey. Garnish with chopped chives and toasted almonds before serving for a burst of flavor and texture.

Notes

  • Keep unused phyllo dough covered tightly with plastic wrap to prevent it from drying out.
  • Be gentle when handling phyllo sheets as they are delicate and can tear easily.
  • Adjust the amount of honey drizzled according to your sweetness preference.
  • To toast almonds, spread them on a baking sheet and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 5-7 minutes until fragrant and lightly browned.
  • Gruyere cheese can be substituted with other semi-hard cheeses like fontina or gouda for variation.
