  • Author: lilan
  • Total Time: 22 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Description

A flavorful Caprese Steak recipe featuring marinated filet mignon or sirloin grilled to perfection, topped with fresh mozzarella, ripe tomatoes, and fragrant basil leaves, combining Italian Caprese salad elements with hearty steak for a delicious and elegant meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Marinade

  • 3/4 cup balsamic vinegar
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon dried thyme
  • 1 tablespoon dried oregano

Steak and Toppings

  • 4 (6-oz.) filet mignon steaks, or 4 large pieces of sirloin
  • 2 beefsteak tomatoes, sliced
  • Kosher salt, to taste
  • 4 slices mozzarella cheese
  • Fresh basil leaves, for serving

Instructions

  1. Prepare the marinade: In a small bowl, whisk together the balsamic vinegar, minced garlic, honey, extra-virgin olive oil, dried thyme, and dried oregano until well combined to create the flavorful marinade.
  2. Marinate the steak: Pour the marinade over the steaks, ensuring they are fully coated. Allow the steaks to marinate for 20 minutes to absorb the flavors.
  3. Season tomatoes: While the steak marinates, slice the beefsteak tomatoes and season them with kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper to enhance their natural sweetness.
  4. Preheat the grill: Heat your grill to high temperature, preparing it for cooking the steak quickly and evenly.
  5. Grill the steak: Place the marinated steaks on the hot grill and cook for 4 to 5 minutes per side, depending on your preferred doneness.
  6. Add mozzarella and tomatoes: After flipping and cooking the second side, top each steak with a slice of mozzarella cheese and several slices of the seasoned tomato. Cover the grill to allow the cheese to melt, about 2 minutes.
  7. Garnish and serve: Remove the steaks from the grill, top with fresh basil leaves, and serve immediately for a savory and refreshing meal.

Notes

  • For best results, use a high-quality cut of beef like filet mignon or a tender sirloin.
  • Adjust marinating time for a more intense flavor if desired, but avoid over-marinating to prevent meat texture changes.
  • Serve with a side of grilled vegetables or a light salad for a complete meal.
  • To keep mozzarella cheese from melting too quickly, add it toward the end of grilling and cover the steaks briefly.
  • If grilling outdoors is not an option, you can broil the steaks in the oven, watching closely to melt the cheese and warm the tomatoes.
